Lewis Lake Campground is a small, forested campground located in the southern portion of Yellowstone National Park near the shores of Lewis Lake. Known for its quieter setting compared to campgrounds closer to Old Faithful and Yellowstone Lake, it provides a more secluded camping experience while still offering access to many of the park’s major attractions. Its location along the South Entrance Road makes it convenient for visitors entering from Grand Teton National Park.
Situated just north of the South Entrance and near Lewis Lake, the campground sits at an elevation of approximately 7,800 feet. The area is characterized by lodgepole pine forest and proximity to both Lewis Lake and the Lewis River. The setting feels wooded and somewhat secluded, with limited lake views from within the campground itself. Its southern location places it within reasonable driving distance of West Thumb Geyser Basin and the Old Faithful area.
Lewis Lake Campground is relatively small compared to other Yellowstone campgrounds. Sites are arranged along simple loops and spurs within the forest. Campsites can accommodate tents and smaller RVs, though size limitations apply and larger rigs may not fit comfortably. The campground does not offer hookups, and the overall layout emphasizes a rustic, less-developed experience typical of older national park campgrounds.
Campsites include picnic tables and fire rings. Vault toilets and potable water are typically available during the operating season. There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups, and no showers are provided on-site. Food storage regulations are strictly enforced within Yellowstone National Park, and proper storage is required to protect wildlife. Campers should be prepared for limited services and variable mountain weather conditions.
Lewis Lake offers opportunities for non-motorized boating, paddling, and fishing where permitted under park regulations. The nearby Lewis River provides additional scenic and recreational interest. From the campground, visitors can access geothermal features at West Thumb Geyser Basin and explore the Old Faithful area within a moderate drive. The South Entrance also connects travelers to Grand Teton National Park, expanding recreation options to include hiking, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives.
Lewis Lake Campground provides a quieter camping option in southern Yellowstone National Park with convenient access to both Yellowstone and Grand Teton destinations. Its forested setting, modest size, and limited amenities make it best suited for visitors seeking a simple, nature-focused basecamp within the park.
