Campground Overview
Gros Ventre Campground – Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Gros Ventre Campground is one of the most scenic and well-loved campgrounds in Grand Teton National Park, situated along the lush Gros Ventre River floodplain and framed by views of the Teton Range. Known for its forested setting, abundant wildlife, and excellent access to hiking, fishing, and scenic drives, Gros Ventre offers a classic Tetons camping experience that appeals to families, outdoor enthusiasts, and nature photographers alike. Its central location makes it a convenient basecamp for exploring everything from alpine lakes to valley overlooks.
Location & Setting
Gros Ventre Campground sits on the eastern side of the Teton Range near the Gros Ventre Junction, a short drive south of the Town of Jackson and Grand Teton National Park’s Moose Visitor Center. The campground is spread across lightly forested terrain beside the Gros Ventre River, with views of rolling hills and distant peaks. This verdant floodplain setting invites early morning birdwatching, pleasant meadow strolls, and a sense of being immersed in the Tetons’ iconic landscape while still being within easy reach of park roads and services.
Campground Overview
Gros Ventre is one of the larger campgrounds in the park, with hundreds of sites spread across multiple loops. It accommodates tents, trailers, and RVs, and there are a few electrical hookups. Many sites offer spacious parking pads and enough room for larger rigs. Sites vary from more shaded, forested locations to open meadow views, giving campers a range of scenery and sun exposure depending on their preference. Because of its size and layout, it often offers more availability than some of the park’s smaller, more competitive campgrounds.
Amenities
Campsites include picnic tables, fire grates, and bear-resistant food storage lockers. Restroom buildings with flush toilets and potable water spigots are scattered throughout the campground. While Gros Ventre does not provide showers, a nearby park store and service area offer basic supplies, fuel, and seasonal Ranger programming. The campground’s roads and walking paths provide easy access to trailheads, river access points, and nearby overlooks without long treks from your site.
Activities & Nearby Recreation
Gros Ventre’s location provides excellent access to a wide range of activities. Fishing enthusiasts enjoy castable sections of the Gros Ventre River and nearby streams, while hikers can easily reach trails like the Slide Lake Trail, Spread Creek Trail, and parts of the Death Canyon and Teton Crest Trail systems. Wildlife viewing is outstanding throughout the area; elk, moose, bison, and pronghorn are often seen grazing near camp at dawn and dusk. Scenic drives along Teton Park Road and into nearby Jackson Hole offer iconic vistas, photography opportunities, and access to alpine lakes and visitor centers.
Summary
Gros Ventre Campground combines accessibility, size, and scenic beauty in one of Grand Teton National Park’s most popular camping areas. With its forested sites, river proximity, and strong access to hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing, it appeals to a broad range of visitors seeking both adventure and comfort. Whether you’re exploring alpine trails, photographing the Tetons at sunrise, or simply relaxing by the river, Gros Ventre serves as an excellent home base for your Grand Teton experience.
