From Butte’s Mining Legacy to Glacier’s Edge

Berkeley Pit & Big Creek Campground

Featured: Bannack, Big Creek, Fish Creek

We pick up this episode in Butte, Montana, as we close out our time at the World Museum of Mining. Walking among the preserved head frames and the recreated streets of the old Orphan Girl Mine, we take in one last look at Montana’s rich mining history before hitting the road north. Before leaving Butte behind, we make a quick stop at the Berkeley Pit — a massive open-pit copper mine that is as haunting as it is fascinating. Once a symbol of industrial power, today it’s a reminder of the complicated legacy that shaped this mining town. From there, we head north across wide Montana landscapes, the road carrying us closer to Glacier National Park. Our destination for the night is Big Creek Campground in the Flathead National Forest, a peaceful retreat tucked deep among the pines. We’re lucky enough to set up camp right on the banks of the North Fork of the Flathead River. With the sound of rushing water as our backdrop, we cast a line from shore, savoring the stillness as evening sets in. It’s a welcome shift from the noise and history of Butte to the natural calm of Montana’s great outdoors.

Filming in Glacier Country

Welcome back to our 2025 Campvue Northern Tour. In this episode, we leave Big Creek Campground in the Flathead National Forest and make our way around to the east entrance of Glacier National Park. Unlike our usual days of pure exploration, today offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at what fuels much of our travels — filming campground drive-thrus for our CampVue YouTube channel and web app. It’s a quieter day, focused on the work that goes into documenting the campgrounds we share with our viewers and building the resource at the heart of our road trips. As the day winds down, we settle into Apgar Campground, near Glacier’s west entrance, ready to explore the park and travel the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road in the next episode. If you’ve ever wondered what goes into creating the content behind our adventures, this one’s for you.

Montana Miles

Scenic Drive from Glacier to Virginia City

Featured: Cabin Creek, Baker's Hole, Avalanche, Apgar, Beaver Creek , Fish Creek, Saint Mary, Sprague Creek, Two Medicine

Rolling south from Glacier through Montana’s valleys and riversides — a peaceful ride filled with winding roads, big skies, and quiet beauty on the way to Virginia City. After several days exploring the beauty of Glacier National Park, we turn south — trading the jagged peaks and alpine forests for the long, open stretches of Montana backroads. This leg of the journey is quieter, more reflective, and captures the kind of peaceful rhythm that only a long drive through the West can offer. Our route winds through valleys lined with golden grass and follows rivers that glint in the sunlight. Every curve of the road reveals another postcard-perfect view — farmland dotted with weathered barns, cottonwoods shimmering in the breeze, and mountains fading into the horizon. There’s a sense of calm in this episode — a simple appreciation for motion, for the sound of tires on dirt, and the small towns that pass by almost unnoticed. Sometimes, road trips aren’t about the destinations or the landmarks — they’re about these moments in between, when you can just sit back, watch the scenery roll past, and breathe. By day’s end, we find ourselves nearing Virginia City, Montana — ready to explore another piece of the state’s fascinating past.

Campground Overview

Fish Creek Campground – Glacier National Park, Montana

Fish Creek Campground is a large, forested campground on the western side of Glacier National Park, offering shaded sites and partial views of Lake McDonald in a quieter setting than the busy entrance area at Apgar. Surrounded by cedar and hemlock trees with easy access to the lake and the Going-to-the-Sun Road, it’s a favorite basecamp for families, road trippers, and returning Glacier visitors who want a more tucked-away feel without giving up convenience.

Location & Setting

The campground is located along the western shore of Lake McDonald, a few miles north of Apgar and the West Glacier entrance. Nestled in dense forest on gently sloping hillsides, Fish Creek offers a cool, shaded environment with the sound of wind in the trees and glimpses of the lake and surrounding peaks in select areas. Its position along the lake and not far from the Going-to-the-Sun Road makes it easy to reach key west-side viewpoints, boat launches, and visitor services while still feeling removed from the busiest traffic zones.

Campground Overview

Fish Creek is one of Glacier’s larger campgrounds, with around 170 sites spread across multiple loops that accommodate tents, trailers, and mid-sized RVs. Many sites are tucked into the trees for privacy and shade, while a handful enjoy filtered views toward Lake McDonald. The loops follow the natural contours of the hillside, creating a layered, terraced feel rather than a flat grid, which adds to the sense of seclusion. Because of its size, shaded forest character, and west-side location, Fish Creek is a very popular campground that typically requires advance planning during peak season.

Amenities

Campsites at Fish Creek include picnic tables, fire rings, and bear-resistant food storage lockers at each site. Restroom buildings with flush toilets and potable water are located throughout the loops. There are no electrical hookups or showers in the campground itself, and RV dump facilities are available closer to the park entrance area. The combination of modern restrooms and traditional, hookup-free sites gives Fish Creek a classic national park camping feel, with enough comfort to be family-friendly while keeping the focus on the surrounding forest and lake.

Activities & Nearby Recreation

From Fish Creek, campers have quick access to Lake McDonald for paddling, shoreline walks, photography, and evening sunset watching. Nearby day-use areas and small beaches provide spots to relax along the water. The campground is also close to the Rocky Point Nature Trail, which offers views across Lake McDonald toward the Livingston Range. A short drive south brings you to Apgar Village, where you’ll find boat rentals, stores, ranger programs, and the start of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. From there, it’s easy to head deeper into the park toward Avalanche Lake, Logan Pass, and other iconic west-side hikes and viewpoints.

Summary

Fish Creek Campground offers a shaded, lakeside forest setting with a quieter atmosphere than the more centralized Apgar area while still keeping campers close to Glacier National Park’s west-side highlights. With its large number of sites, classic wooded loops, and easy access to Lake McDonald and the Going-to-the-Sun Road, it’s an excellent choice for visitors who want a comfortable, scenic, and well-located base for exploring the park.
