Things to Do

From Butte’s Mining Legacy to Glacier’s Edge

Berkeley Pit & Big Creek Campground

Featured: Bannack, Big Creek, Fish Creek

We pick up this episode in Butte, Montana, as we close out our time at the World Museum of Mining. Walking among the preserved head frames and the recreated streets of the old Orphan Girl Mine, we take in one last look at Montana’s rich mining history before hitting the road north. Before leaving Butte behind, we make a quick stop at the Berkeley Pit — a massive open-pit copper mine that is as haunting as it is fascinating. Once a symbol of industrial power, today it’s a reminder of the complicated legacy that shaped this mining town. From there, we head north across wide Montana landscapes, the road carrying us closer to Glacier National Park. Our destination for the night is Big Creek Campground in the Flathead National Forest, a peaceful retreat tucked deep among the pines. We’re lucky enough to set up camp right on the banks of the North Fork of the Flathead River. With the sound of rushing water as our backdrop, we cast a line from shore, savoring the stillness as evening sets in. It’s a welcome shift from the noise and history of Butte to the natural calm of Montana’s great outdoors.

Along the way, we explore quiet turnouts, hidden picnic spots, and pristine views of Montana’s wilderness that few travelers ever see. The drive ends with a choice — continue on the Red Meadow Creek route or detour north toward the Canadian border. Either way, this scenic stretch offers a perfect blend of solitude, adventure, and classic Big Sky beauty. Whether you’re planning your own overlanding route or just love the serenity of forest roads, this episode captures the magic of Montana’s backcountry.

Between the Mountains and the Mission

Filming in Glacier Country

Featured: Avalanche, Apgar, Big Creek, Fish Creek, Saint Mary, Sprague Creek, Two Medicine

Welcome back to our 2025 Campvue Northern Tour. In this episode, we leave Big Creek Campground in the Flathead National Forest and make our way around to the east entrance of Glacier National Park. Unlike our usual days of pure exploration, today offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at what fuels much of our travels — filming campground drive-thrus for our CampVue YouTube channel and web app. It’s a quieter day, focused on the work that goes into documenting the campgrounds we share with our viewers and building the resource at the heart of our road trips. As the day winds down, we settle into Apgar Campground, near Glacier’s west entrance, ready to explore the park and travel the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road in the next episode. If you’ve ever wondered what goes into creating the content behind our adventures, this one’s for you.

Campground Overview

Big Creek Campground – Flathead National Forest, Montana

Big Creek Campground sits along the Wild and Scenic North Fork of the Flathead River in the Flathead National Forest, offering a peaceful forest retreat just outside the northwestern boundary of Glacier National Park. Surrounded by dense evergreens, cool mountain air, and crystal-clear river water, this campground is a favorite among paddlers, anglers, families, and those seeking quiet camping near Glacier without the crowds.

Location & Setting

Located about 20 miles northwest of Columbia Falls along the North Fork Road, Big Creek Campground sits in a remote and scenic corridor that parallels the western edge of Glacier National Park. The North Fork River flows directly beside the campground, offering views of the Livingston Range and the park’s rugged peaks. Although the access road is gravel, it is well traveled in summer, and the journey itself showcases classic Montana scenery—pine forests, wide river valleys, and towering mountains on the horizon.

Campground Overview

Big Creek Campground features a collection of spacious, well-separated sites suitable for tents, trailers, and small to mid-sized RVs. Many sites sit beneath tall pines that provide excellent shade and a classic forest atmosphere. The loops are arranged close to the river, with some sites offering filtered water views or quick access to shoreline trails. The campground is popular but not overly developed, making it a perfect choice for campers seeking a more natural and rustic environment while still being close to Glacier National Park’s west-side attractions.

Amenities

Amenities at Big Creek include picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and potable drinking water in season. There are no electrical hookups or dump stations, and campers should be prepared for a traditional, forest-style camping experience. A large day-use area near the river provides access for picnicking, launching small watercraft, or simply relaxing by the water. Bear-resistant food storage practices are required in this area due to its healthy population of black bears and grizzly bears, and food lockers or vehicle storage should be used as instructed.

Activities & Nearby Recreation

Big Creek is an excellent basecamp for river recreation. The North Fork of the Flathead River is popular for floating, kayaking, rafting, and fishing, with cold, clear waters and outstanding views of Glacier National Park’s western mountains. Anglers can target trout species in the river, and wildlife enthusiasts often spot deer, bald eagles, osprey, and the occasional bear in surrounding forest habitat. Hiking opportunities can be found along nearby forest roads, river corridors, and trailheads leading into Glacier National Park.

The Polebridge area, famous for its rustic mercantile and backcountry access, is located farther up the North Fork Road and makes a great day trip. Campers can also drive into the West Glacier area for scenic drives, visitor centers, guided tours, and access to the Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Summary

Big Creek Campground offers a quiet forest setting, beautiful river access, and excellent proximity to the remote northwest edge of Glacier National Park. With shady sites, clean facilities, and abundant outdoor recreation, it’s an ideal getaway for campers seeking a relaxed and scenic Montana experience. Whether floating the North Fork, hiking among towering pines, or using the campground as a peaceful base for exploring Glacier, Big Creek is a memorable and rewarding destination.
