Before I get started, I want to get out in front of a couple things as this is not going to be a good review of this campsite or campground. This is the first one star review I've written for Campvue, and if you follow me, most sites get 4's and 5's. But I do try to be fair and objective, hence why I am being a bit harsh here. But, do note, there appear to be a few sites in this campground that could be a good choice, so don't take this as the entire facility is a disaster and keep in mind that reviews on Campvue focus on the campsite itself, and are not meant to rate the entire campground. That said, I can tell you, I predict many of the campsites here will have the same kind of issues I point out about site 65, so do make note. The first thing to understand, which you'd likely notice right away on recreation.gov, is that most sites in this campground are walk-in style sites, meant for tents. Site 65 is among these. You park in a small area that has no clear designation of which parking spot belongs to which site, and walk into the woods a short ways and set up your tent. The first sign of trouble happened when I arrived. I honestly could not tell for sure which was my campsite and which one was the neighboring site. They are so close together that they blend in. So I had to go find a campground host to help me figure it out . Privacy is horrendous here with these walk-in sites. Later in the afternoon, the group next to me arrived, and I use the word group literally. They had three cars among them, and three tents, meant for a small single tent site. It was like a small family reunion. I know this was against policy, but I was nice and tried to overlook it, but this pattern seemed to repeat in this section. It became a small tent city by the end of the night. Just like the thumbnail we chose for this campground. It was highly awkward and uncomfortable. But, once again, I told myself just chill... you are just here to sleep. No big deal. As the day went on, the parking area in front of these walk-ins was at capacity. As I said, the group next to me had three cars. I learned later that you can only have two. But for whatever reason, unlike most campgrounds that have walk-ins, this campground does not designate parking spots for the sites. I saw these people squeeze their cars in tight, and noticed that I was not going to be able to open the door to my truck to get in. I also noticed one of the people in the group had their car door open, touching my truck, and while they were getting in and out, the door was rubbing up and down against it. This concerned me so I got up and went over to discuss my concern, albeit calmly, with these people. They basically said, well, we all have to work together here, as there is nothing else to be done. So, note... they broke the rules twice here already... once with bringing in more tents than allowed in this site, and one too many vehicles. After all this I decided there was nothing else to be done, so tried to go to sleep. But as you can imagine, in this tent city, it was quite noisy. That group decided to start their little family reunion campfire and story telling after 10:00 pm (after quiet hours), but the rest of the campground was behaving the same. It was a circus. Nobody from the facility, hosts or rangers, enforced any rules. It was pretty miserable, as I get up early (like at 4 am), so this was the worst camping experience of my life, bar none. One thing they could do to improve this is at least designate parking spots to try and limit oversized groups from taking up residence here. I did call to complain later, but they did not care. They had nothing to comment on. So let this be a lesson to you. If you want a quiet, private camping experience, avoid the walk-in sites at all costs! Check nearby Crane Flat first as that is a much better campground. Make Hodgdon your last choice unless you like tent cities!
