I gave site 42 a 3 out of 5. This is hard for me to do, because Whitney Portal is an amazing place and the campground is no exception. Site 42 might be a 4 out of 5 in a different context, but here, there are better choices. 42 is a small site, good for a tent, but not a huge tent. A 6 person tent is starting to push it here. The site is in the woods, like all other sites here, so shade is great. There are nearby sites, but they did not feel too close. So decent privacy. The biggest challenge is going to be the parking spot. It's tight, and getting into it, especially if you want to back in, is hard. There is a large boulder next to the driveway, and the driveway is at an awkward angle. I have a Chevy Colorado (on the smaller side of pick up trucks) and it was pretty tight for me, so something wider may struggle. Best bet is, drive past the site, turn around and back in on the return. Not a site that will work for an RV or if you are towing something. Also note, this site, along with a few others (in the high numbers), are in a different section of the campground, with its own entrance, which may throw some off.
