Site P22 at Utahraptor's Fossil Flats Primitive Campground lived up to my expectations. Since this is a new campground, we had a hard time finding photos or info about it, so used satellite photos to try and gauge privacy and understand the terrain, since I am a tent camper. And now, Campvue has you covered! What I love about site P22 is how it is kind of isolated, in its own corner of the loop it's on. It's up against a hill with cool, crumbling sandstone formations. So the primary features we loved are privacy, levelness and the interesting landscape features. That said, they did an awesome job spacing sites out in general here, so most sites do well in the privacy area in our opinion-- P22 just does an extra good job. The only challenge as a tent camper was, much of the terrain is hard, slick rock, so staking in a tent can be impossible. We got most stakes in, but a few were not possible. Now some would say, no problem, weigh the tent down with rocks... and that works most of the time, but I would caution you... if you are not familiar with the purpose of guy lines and understand how strong winds can effect a tent, you'll likely learn a hard lesson one day when a tent pole snaps in half. That said, most times, you'll not have an issue, but since this is an exposed campground in the desert, with no trees to break the wind up, trust me-- it can get very, very windy. I camped here square in the center of monsoon season and had a very windy night, but all was fine. Just something to consider. If you are in a rig though, not an issue for you, I know. And I think site P22, as well as most sites, will accommodate large rigs. Just know, its a dry, rustic experience and amenities are slim here at the primitive campground. no hookups, dump station, water, etc... Come prepared! You get a fire ring, and picnic table, and there are vault toilets in each section. And that's it! P22 is the closest to the vault toilets on this loop, and if you understand the layout, others will have quite the walk if they need to use the toilets. So another benefit of P22 in my opinion. Close to the toilets, but not too close, if you know what I mean! They do have another campground here that is very developed, with great amenities including showers, flushing toilets and more, but note that guests at Fossil Flats are not permitted to use the showers here. The other campground is more expensive and that is one of the reasons why. You want more, you will pay more. Not that Fossil Flats is the best example of a cheap campground... I think they could lower the price by about $10 for Fossil Flats to make it more fair, but its Moab, so what are you gonna do? There are some world class Jeep trails that start within feet of the campground, and they take you to various public lands, dinosaur track sites, and even a back way into Arches National Park. So this is an amazing location in general. There is no shade at all here, and summer gets hot, though as I found, in July, I was literally the only person camping in my section. So if you enjoy the tradeoff of heat for having the place to yourself, summer is worth it. All in all, we loved site P22, can absolutely recommend it, and would camp here again in a heartbeat!
