4 out of 5

This is an interesting site to discuss, as I used my own Campvue campground drive thru footage to make a choice to book site 441 here at Crane Flat. And it worked! The footage above was taken during my first Yosemite trip, when I camped at a different campground here, Hodgdon Meadow, in which I had perhaps my worst camping experience of all time. In short, Hodgdon has some privacy issues to say the least, so when shopping for a campsite for my second trip, it was important to pick something more private to cure the bad taste left in my mouth at Hodgdon. The impression the video above gave me about site 441 was that it is on a corner, better spaced-out than some of the neighboring sites, and bordering the woods (so no neighbors behind you). And in reality, this was exactly correct. Maybe even better than I thought. Now, the sites that border this one have some privacy issues and a few are very tight on space, because they crammed em' in there as they often do at national park campgrounds. Plus, some of the neighboring ones are also on a hill slope, whereas 441 is at the bottom of the hill and nice and level. Great for a tent. I would not call it 5 star privacy but certainly 4 star privacy in the context of a national park campground. The setting is also peaceful and relaxing. The site's backyard is just woods, so I spent a few hours during my stay with my fold out chair set up facing the woods and watched various birds and small critters doing their thing. Very relaxing. The campground is near to a gas station and market (a short two minute drive away), so some convenience is to be had in this section of the national park (which is about 40 minutes away from the Yosemite Valley area most think about when they envision Yosemite. My only gripe is, the only showers for the entirety of Yosemite National Park are at Curry Village, in the valley, which if you account for the return trip is almost 2 hours of driving, plus banging your head against the dashboard to find parking. Why this park obviously spends millions making the valley feel like a Disney Resort and can't put basic showers out this way (when they already have the infrastructure like running water) is beyond me. If they kept the valley rustic, I would not complain, but the irony is, if you're going to turn the national park into a resort-style experience anyway, might as well make it easier for a guy to get a shower in these further away campgrounds. But outside of that, little for me to gripe about. You at least do have restrooms with running water (toilets and sinks), trash collection, and the usual national park campground style amenities. When you are shopping around and flagging sites to consider, and especially if you are in a tent, 441 is one to mark as a contender. I imagine there's a couple 5 star gems in this campground, but many are far less private and level than 441, so it does stand out for those reasons.
