Apgar Campground is one of several amazing campgrounds inside Glacier. This one is very large, and very popular, being on the West side of Glacier, not far from the west entrance. The campground is off the southern shore of Lake McDonald, near Apgar Village, where you will find plenty of modern conveniences like a small general store and food options. The campground is located in a forest, which in the summer provides lots of welcome shade. Site B68, as with virtually all other sites here, are under this canopy, providing relief from the summer sun. One thing that impressed me about many of the sites here are that they are a little more spread out than many other national park campsites. B68 is in between another site, and one of the restrooms, but both are comfortably distanced. In my experience, camping near a bathroom is one part convenient, and one part annoying, as it can attract a lot of foot traffic near the site. Not with site B68... the path to the restrooms is far enough away that I did not notice people going to and fro. There is plenty of level space to pitch a tent in B68, and technically the pull through driveway is large enough for a good-sized rig, but I will warn you, the driveway (these are dirt and gravel) is very uneven and not level, although there are plenty of others that are. If that is important to you and you are in a rig, do make note. I visited during peak season when crowds are at their largest, and while the Apgar village area is pretty darn busy, inside the campground was tolerable. There were a lot of people riding bikes and walking by the site during the day, but nothing that bothered me. The only time the crowds created a challenge was when I wanted to take a shower at the campground. They have a few showers located off loop A, which were clean and in spacious rooms, but lines will form in the afternoons. I find that carving out time in the middle of the day (11 am - noon) is an ideal time to go, as there was no wait. The regular restooms (like the one near the site), are clean, although slightly dated, but on par with most national park campground restrooms. No complaints. One super important thing to understand (as you may already know), is that a timed entry reservation is typically required during core day time hours to drive the Going to the Sun Road in the park, and while Apgar and another campground are inside the park, staying in this campground does not exempt you from needing one of those. Other parks (like Arches) exempt you from timed entry if you are camping, but not with Apgar (or Fish Creek). If you are like me, someone who was able to snag a camping reservation, but not a timed entry-- never fear. You have two solid options... First, either wait until the afternoon when timed entry ends for the day, and you will still have many hours of daylight left to drive the entire Going to the Sun drive and then some, which we found worked well. Or, you can drive out of the park, all the way to the east entrance (near St. Mary), and take the road in a westerly direction. No timed entry is required coming from the east. It's only the west side that limits access, and the checkpoint is very near Apgar. Overall, I can highly recommend Apgar campground and we had a pleasant stay over the course of two nights, and enjoyed this side of the park!
